What are the Goals of the Training Program?
Before you start investing all of the time and work into having the training program, you first need to understand what you are actual goals are. You should be able to clearly identify what you are hoping to get out of training program so you can then build up a plan for how to get there. Some good goals can include making sure employees are properly trained or helping to ensure top talent stays with your organization.
Who Should Be Allowed to Participate?
You will also need to ask yourself who will be able to participate in the training program. If there are clear benefits to being a part of the training program, there will likely be a lot of demand from the existing employees. You will need to have clear cut expectations and qualifications in order for somebody to participate.
How Will the Training be Managed?
Simply having a training program in place is not good enough. You will need to have a great plan in place that will govern how the program will be managed. This can include finding employees in your organization that can manage the process and growth of the training program.
How Can I Track Progress?
While you will want to have a variety of ways to train employees, you also want to make sure that you are able to identify improvement. For all parts of the training program, you should look for a way to subjectively measure how employees are progressing. This will be able to provide you with clear benefits of the training program.
Do I Have Senior Management Buy-In?
Most organizations will clearly be able to identify advantages of having a training program. However, for it to be effective, you will need to have the support of senior management. Before you start to incorporate a new training program, you will want to make sure that you are able to sell all managers on the benefits of the program. This will help to ensure that you get the support you need.
Is This Relevant?
When you are having a training program in place, you also need to make sure that it is relevant for the work that your employees will be doing. Ideally, you should be able to establish a training program that will directly help to make an employee better at their job. At a minimum, you should help to develop the employee into an asset that will be valuable to the company for years to come.
Is There Alignment?
Finally, you will want to have some alignment with your employees. An employee that is part of the training program should in some way be required to commit to the company and continue to work hard. This will ensure that you do not waste valuable resources on an employee that will leave after finishing the program.
